School starts in less than a week, but it’s not too late for high school students to enroll in Abilene’s only Academy high school.
The Academy of Technology, Engineering, Math and Science is taking applications for students entering the ninth, 10th and 11th grades.
It’s a rare opportunity, according to the school’s director, John Martinez.
When the school opened two years ago, it was one of 42 New Tech Network high schools in the U.S. However, the project-based curriculum is growing in popularity, Martinez said, and the nation now boasts 85 New Tech Network high schools.
“The project-based learning experience pushes kids to own their education,” he said. “We want them to be thinkers, analyze data, come up with solutions to problems.”
