Brown Announces Over $4M in Race to t he Top Funds Awarded to Thirteen Schools in Northeast Ohio

“Students in Ohio deserve access to a good education—and that starts with access to top-notch schools,” said Brown. “I applaud Ohio’s participation in the Race to the Top program, which will invest in educators who are working tirelessly to improve schools in Northeast Ohio and throughout the state.”

In January 2010, Senator Brown wrote a letter of support regarding Race to the Top funds for Ohio to Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

“Ohio has commenced its new biennium with a comprehensive education reform plan,” Brown wrote in the letter. “Funding provided through the Race to the Top program would accelerate the state’s existing agenda to strategically address gaps in delivering a highly effective learning experience to all students.”

Programs will focus on the following models:

AVID – Advancement Via Individual Determination
A proven college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll and persist in four-year colleges or universities.

STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Math
The Ohio STEM Learning Network ( OSLN ) is a privately-supported, non-profit initiative that works with regional, state-level and national stakeholders to enhance STEM education.

New Tech – The New Technology Network
Since 1996, The New Technology Network has worked with districts and states to develop 62 schools that have implemented an innovative model to transform secondary teaching and learning.
