As cameras roll, veterans share their stories with New Technology High students

Seventeen students from New Technology High School’s web and video production class put their skills to the test Monday, recording the oral histories of veterans in Yountville.

The students, mostly juniors and seniors, visited the Veterans Home of California at Yountville for five hours, interviewing eight veterans and recording about seven hours of video.

Their teacher, James Brown, set up the project with the veterans home and 1000memories.com, a website where people share old photos and stories. 1000memories is working with the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project to record stories of World War II veterans.

“We have so much history here — living, breathing history,” said Susan Heims, volunteer coordinator at the veterans home. “Many of the World War II veterans in the home are in their 90s, and it is important to record their stories now while we still can.”

Not all of the veterans who participated in the event served in World War II. Louis Marlberg, 79, was a staff sergeant in the Army who fought in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was interviewed by 16-year-old New Tech student Siera Self.
