Central Middle School and three others nationwide have been asked to apply to become the first middle schools in the New Tech schools network.
For the schools, joining the historically high-schools network would mean additional funding, tools for students and training and resources for teachers. For students across the nation, expanding the model to middle school students will mean increased access to a revolutionary approach to education.
New Tech classrooms use cutting-edge technology and require students to work in teams on real-life, interdisciplinary project-based learning. In fall 2008, the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. took a leap into the educational unknown by becoming the first school district in the nation to launch a kindergarten through 12th-grade program modeled after the national network. Local programs using the approach are called Columbus Signature Academies.
