Delaware New Tech Academy to Open in August

It will be a first for the First State when the Delaware New Tech Academy opens in August at Seaford Senior High School.

The Delaware New Tech Academy, a part of the New Tech Network, will use project-based learning. Students will work every day with laptop or desktop computers, and in teams on real world projects.
Chandra Phillips, the current associate principal at Seaford Senior High School, will be director of Delaware New Tech Academy. Phillips said the New Tech Network model will make students ready for life after graduation.

"The model is so strongly built around collaboration, teamwork, professionalism," Phillips said. "We're just better preparing students to succeed after high school."

The Delaware New Tech Academy will have a freshmen and sophomore class of 100 students. The academy will exist within one wing of Seaford Senior High School, but Phillips said officials hope to build an extension onto the high school for the academy by 2014. Phillips said the Seaford School District's Board of Education has approved the expansion of Seaford Senior High School.

One incoming freshman, Memoree Adkins of Seaford, said she thinks the academy will get her ready for a career in graphic design.

"I like to draw a lot and the job I'm looking at involves computers," Adkins said. "I feel New Tech will help me with working with computers."
