Governor Daniels goes to school in Evansville

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels spent part of Wednesday in Evansville, visiting the EVSC's new technical institute.

While touring the school and observing classes, the governor talked to students directly about how they're learning in a new way and why they chose to come to the new tech center instead of a traditional classroom.

"Kids seem very determined," Daniels said. "For instance if a student is not pulling his own weight, the other students can vote him off the island, so to speak."

The new tech institute opened just a few months ago. It's a different way of learning, hands on, often In teams. It's an approach that's meant to be more like a workplace environment.

"Students have to work together not only in terms of learning, but also showing how it could be used in real life situations," said principal Cory Herrin.

Daniels had high praise for Evansville schools.

"I don't think we have a finer school district in the state right now than Evansville and there are a lot of things I would complement here, but one of them is the understanding that a wide range of options and being open to new ways of teaching, not every child is the same, is really important."
