M.C., Lake may create a New Tech Network-based school

MASON CITY — Mason City and Clear Lake schools hope to establish an Iowa Innovation Zone School.

The Mason City School Board on Monday approved sending an application of intent to the State Department of Education to establish the school.

Using an approach developed by New Tech Network, a non-profit organization, the districts would join forces in creating a “school within a school” — a type of regional academy. An “innovation zone school” structure was established by the Iowa Legislature in 2010.

New Tech Network is an approach that uses project-based learning that allows student collaboration with teachers and practical applications, and boosts critical thinking and presentation skills.
