New Tech School Still Has Open Spots 4/20/11

An anticipated new technology school for ECISD still has spots to fill, even after parents camped out to turn in their students' applications. But those holes may not be such a bad thing.

About two weeks ago over 130 cars camped outside Ratliff Stadium for the first come first serve enrollment process to be apart of ECISD’s New Tech Odessa. The schools’ innovative approach to education has many students excited and now they don't have to wait to see if they got in.

It's a new type of learning that has students and parents eager to go to school.

"I think that it's better than the old fashioned way of learning because they are teaching you one on one and they're not with old textbooks that they've been using forever," said one student.

"I really like it, I've never seen my son so interested in something like this," a parent told CBS 7.

The New Tech Odessa offers project-based learning and Principal Adrian Vega says that not reaching capacity and not having a lottery to decide who gets in and who doesn’t is a blessing in disguise.

"The best case scenario for me, ECISD, and New Tech Odessa would be for every single student who expressed a genuine interest in trying to get into New Tech. If we accepted all of them, to be honest that'd be the best case scenario," said Vega.
