Sam Houston High School is partnering with the New Technology Network to open a New Tech program at the school.
Trustees in the San Antonio Independent School District approved the two-year contract Tuesday night in an effort to turn around the chronically underperforming campus.
New Tech schools emphasize projects, group work and the use of technology.
The network includes 62 schools, but Sam Houston will be the only school in South Texas to offer the program when it opens in August. It will be open to about 250 students from across SAISD and will operate as a school within a school.
The cost of the program will be covered by a $4.66 million grant awarded to the school after it was identified by the state a “persistently lowest-achieving” school and agreed to implement a transformation model of which the New Tech program is a part.
