School getting technological boost

New Technology High School students in Pinckney Community Schools will have two unique pieces of technology to utilize next school year.

Within the next two months, the district will have installed a 1-kilowatt wind turbine and a series of five connected solar panels — which together will also produce approximately 1 kilowatt of power — on the high school's roof.

According to high school teacher Joel Craig, who initiated the grant process, the renewable-energy technology will serve two purposes.

It will serve as an educational tool for the school's project-based geodesign and physics courses as well as a power producer.

Power produced from the turbine and solar panels will feed back into the power grid and earn the school energy credits from DTE Energy.
