Schools look into social media policies

Starting next school year, Dayton Public School teachers and staff won't be able message, follow, or friend students by internet or by text message. State law in Missouri bans personal communication between students and teachers through social media as well.

Tricia Bell takes us to Lima Senior to see if the school will follow suit.

As a student who has grown up with fast paced technology, Lima Senior High School junior DarQuavious Brown expects instant feedback when completing assignments.

I'm chatting with my teacher, Mr. Richardson, for physics on a project, and he answered right back it was a great help," said Brown.

The webpage Brown is on to finish class work looks a lot like Facebook. Instead, the Progressive Academy uses a resource called Echo. Teachers describe it as a cross between Facebook and online programs used by colleges.

"It's a great way to keep in touch," said Justin Richardson, Progressive Academy teacher. "It connects to some of the social media, but it keeps it educationally focused."
