Senior Advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Education to visit Ypsilanti New Tech

Ypsilanti, MI—Greg Darnieder, senior advisor to the United States Secretary of Education on the College
Access Initiative will visit Ypsilanti New Tech @ Ardis on Thursday, September 8, 2011, from 10:30 a.m.-
noon. Darnieder’s visit is part of U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan’s Midwest Tour.
“We’re honored to host Mr. Darnieder,” says Ypsilanti Public Schools Superintendent Dedrick Martin.
“Ypsilanti New Tech @ Ardis has given many tours to local dignitaries but this is our first national tour.”
In July 2011, the Ypsilanti New Tech @ Ardis site received National Demonstration Site Status—based on its
high fidelity of implementation—making it eligible to host national attendees for Executive Tours for the New
Tech Network, a non-profit organization that works with schools and communities to implement innovative high
schools.
While at Ypsilanti New Tech, Darnieder will learn about innovative New Tech curriculum. “Our teachers
design rigorous, real-world projects tied to state and district standards that are deeply integrated with technology
to create a learning environment that is relevant and engaging for students,” explains Cory McElmeel, New
Tech Dean.
