School Profile:
Akins New Tech opened in August 2006 as the first New Tech school in Texas. We provide rigorous, project-based learning that empowers students to gain 21st-century skills while exceeding state educational requirements. In 2009, New Tech Network named Akins a Demonstration Site designation for the exceptional achievement of our school and students.
The Akins experience includes working in a small-school environment where students and staff share a culture of trust, respect, and responsibility. Technology, in the form of a 1:1 ratio of student to networked computer, is the platform that supports project-based learning. Students have access to the network e-mail, internet access at home and storage space for an electronic portfolio.
Akins New Tech is located on the campus of the larger W. Charles Akins High School, which supports five academies. This allows students to participate in a variety of extracurricular activities, such as athletics, student government, PALS, Air Force JROTC, HOSA, Project Lead The Way, band and orchestra.
Noteworthy programs and successes:
- One hundred seventy-three Austin School District seniors earned national recognition for their exemplary performance in the National Merit Scholarship Program, the National Hispanic Scholar Award Program and the National Achievement Scholarship Program for 2010.
