In 2009, Abilene Independent School District opened the doors to the new Academy of Technology, Engineering, Math & Science (ATEMS). The major learning goal for ATEMS students is to acquire the 21st-century skills that are needed to compete in a global workplace. ATEMS is especially designed for students interested in pursuing careers in engineering and computer science. Both courses of study emphasize math, science and technology with a project-based learning curriculum based on the New Tech Network model. Students tackle project-based, real-world problems and work cooperatively in groups. All graduates fulfill state requirements for recommended or distinguished achievement. Students also can accrue college credit through ATEMS’s partnerships with local universities and colleges and explore potential career pathways in internships with local businesses.
