School Profile:

Fort Wayne Community Schools embarked on a high school redesign process in 2006. New Tech Academy at Wayne High School is one result of that extensive redesign initiative.

A school-within-a-school facility, located within Wayne High School, the New Tech Academy has been identified as a cornerstone of the technology and innovation efforts taking place in Northeast Indiana. NTA is one of the six programs of study, dispersed among the six high schools in Fort Wayne Community Schools, from which students can choose.

Funded by a Small Learning Communities Federal grant, the district researched best practices across the nation. It worked with the business community to explore the New Tech model. While high schools throughout the district began implementing new approaches, Wayne High began construction to create New Tech High as a small school initiative housed in a larger building.

Opening in fall 2009, New Tech Academy @ Wayne recruited and enrolled 96 students and trained six teachers. As this new school worked to develop a curriculum relevant to 21st-Century demands, Science was integrated with English, Spanish with History of the World, and Math with an Introduction to Chemistry and Physics.  Students are challenged daily with these three integrations driven by challenging, relevant projects.

Noteworthy programs and successes:
  • Students created projects to compete in the Science Olympiad
  • Students hosted the Allen County Youth Summit that teaches 8-12 grade students how to reach out and help our community
  • Students worked with a local business partner designing an electronic music curriculum with a recording studio
  • Teachers are being trained and are integrating Project Lead The Way into the sophomore curriculum due to a donation from a business partner
